Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)
Neuro-Linguistic Programming is the study of the way in which we represent the world in our minds. When we remember an event we do not relive it again exactly as we experienced it the first time, instead we have a representation of it. This may be a picture, a sound, a feeling, a taste, a smell or a combination of these. In a similar way a map represents our street but it is not the real thing.
If you close your eyes and think of your favourite food or a childhood memory you will find that your mind represents it in a particular way. The way, in which you represent it, is very important to how you feel about it. By changing these representations you can change the way you respond to the world. NLP seeks to change the representations that are causing problems so that they work in the most positive way for you.
NLP looks at how successful people overcome difficulties and acheive their aspirations. Why have people like Richard Branson or top athletes like Linford Christie acheived what they have acheived? Is it merely luck? By learning how people like them view the world we can make positive changes in our own lives.
Why is it that some people develop phobias? They run them as a pattern or a program in their minds. They weren't born with the phobia (although some people think they are). There are NLP techniques which change the program and over - right it with a new one so that instead of feeling fear they feel indifference.
The Sunday Times article (click on link below) looks at some examples of how NLP can help people overcome negative patterns or programs in their lives.
